Merry Making and Morality; the History of the Genre Painting

Scenes of everyday life in art all but disappeared with the beginning of Christianity, only to return in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries with depictions of street and domestic scenes initially by the likes of Peter Bruegel the Elder, later other Dutch masters such as Jan Steer and Vermeer and becoming a vibrant art form at the hands of Hogarth,
Millais, Berthe Morisot and others.

Clare Ford-Wille

A writer and broadcaster, appearing on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4 and contributing to newspapers, magazines and opera and concert programmes worldwide. Lectures widely about the culture of Central Europe during the 19th and Clare Ford-Wille is an independent art historian, well known to members for her courses at Birkbeck and Morley College as well as a lecturer at the National Gallery, the V&A and The Arts Society groups in Britain and Europe. She has led many tours abroad. Clare is a Vice President of The London Art History Society.
