The Great Buildings and Gardens of Portugal
Barbara Peacock
A small country, Portugal has an astonishingly rich artistic legacy, enabled by the wealth of its huge colonial empire. From magnificent mediaeval abbeys to a unique version of the Renaissance with decorative motifs inspired by its great seafaring tradition. We will see early formal gardens beautified by ‘azuelos’, the coloured pictorial tiles which are such a feature of Portugal, together with some of the most important Neo-classical buildings in Europe.
