Monet's Normandy

Monet’s Impression, Sunrise was painted at Le Havre, his birthplace. It prompted the term ‘Impressionism’ when exhibited alongside the work of that daringly innovative group of artists we now know well. The paintings remind one of Cézanne’s famous remark that Monet was only an eye, “but my God, what an eye!”

Juliet Heslewood

Juliet Heslewood studied History of Art and English Literature at Birkbeck and later lived for nearly thirty years in France where she devised and led art study tours in six different regions. She has written many books on art and now, back in England, concentrates on public lecturing (regularly at the Ashmolean Museum) and her writing career.
